Shikakai is one of the most well-known ayurvedic plants that has been used in India over the centuries for hair care. It is a variety of the acacia, rich in saponins (natural detergents), widespread in Asia and, in particular, in the Indian subcontinent. The name, shikakai, literally means “fruit for hair” (sigai = tresses + kaay=fruit).
Desert date was used in ancient Egypt by pharaohs to protect and strengthen skin and hair from the sun and the desert wind. A product so precious it was also traded for gold. The desert date extract is rich in cleansing, moisturizing, and antioxidant vegetable saponins.
Baby’s breath is widely known for its decorative use. It is a perennial plant native to Eastern Europe, Siberia, and Central Asia. An extract with a high saponin content and natural cleansing properties is obtained from its roots, motivating its use as soap in the Mediterranean basin over the centuries.
